What does a day as a Back-end Developer look like?

As a Back-end Developer, you help improve our software. Your team consists of ProActivians from all over the world, usually working from the Netherlands. But, all ProActivians have the opportunity to work from anywhere in the world for 12 weeks a year. So, you might be working with colleagues online who are on vacation in Surinam or France! Your day could look something like this as a Back-end Developer at Visma | ProActive:

9.00 During the daily huddle, you discuss the progress of the sprint. You go over the Jira board together with your team and bring up anything that stands in the way of reaching your sprint-goal. After the huddle, you sit down with a colleague who is unsure about a bug and help them fix it. Of course, you also finish an issue by adding some tests to cover your code.

11.30 Time for the retrospective with your team and go over the past sprint. Meetings don’t take more than an hour, because we value efficient meetings and make things short and sweet.

12:30 Lunch time! Working at the office? Then you’re provided with a delicious lunch you can share with your colleagues. Working from home? That means it’s your own responsibility to take a break. Balance is very important to us, so don’t forget those 30 minutes!

For the rest of the afternoon, you coordinate with your multi-disciplinary team to get things done. You work together with both front-end developers, UX professionals and other back-end developers to add value to the project. Or, depending on which epic has the most priority, you'll closely work together with back-end developers from other teams to advance the tech stack and improve the project at its technical core.

What do I need to be a Senior Back-end Developer at Visma | ProActive?

You have:

• At least five years of experience with MySQL, PHP frameworks, preferably Laravel, and object-oriented programming (OOP)

• Experience with Scrum/Kanban

• Experience in developing and executing different types of tests, including unit tests, functional tests, and acceptance tests. Familiarity with PHPUnit or similar testing frameworks.

• Proficiency in using GIT for version control, including experience with branching, merging, pull requests, and collaborative workflows. Understanding of best practices in version control.

• Strong problem-solving and debugging skills

• Communication skills to convey your opinion clearly and convincingly to others and create a constructive feedback discussion

If you have any other relevant skills, that’s great! But not obligatory. If you for example have experience with Redis, Docker and DevOps experience, awesome! But again, they’re not necessary requirements for this job. Just ‘nice to have’s.

You are:

• Tech-savvy. You have a need to keep up to date with the newest technologies in web-dev

• Able to communicate clearly with your teammates. Everything we do, we do together and we all need to be on the same page

• Able to handle feedback and aren’t afraid to give constructive feedback to others in return
